Hopping Along With Hopscotch From The Ground To The Table

We are currently living in the age of exploring new dimensions of experience in the gaming industry. It allows audiences to explore varieties of the game from different generations and revamp games to quench their thirst for having new obstacles and exploring old games.

Kunte Belle, Laylay, Paandi, Potsy, Hopscotch, we know it by many names. Popularly known as Hopscotch, this playground game has managed to entertain kids as well as adults all over the world for generations. It is one of the oldest and most popular streets/playground games to exist. The Hopscotch court was used to help Roman foot soldiers to improve their footwork as they ran the course in full armor.

Roman children are said to have taken inspiration from the game played by the soldiers.

Through this project, we tried to come up with new variations of Hopscotch indoor portable games, which were made completely from trash found in our surroundings.

Discovery Phase

Our discovery phase started with collecting the research data, the history of the game, and how it was/is played, which guided us in forming our interview questions.

Define and Analyze Phase

All the interviews conducted and the pain points discovered helped us in improving our sagacity. Through the interviews, we were able to understand and recognize the opportunities that the game presented before us.

Ideation and Development Phase

In each ideation, we focused majorly on a few factors like interactivity, portability, inclusiveness, and affordability. We tried to take the elements of Hopscotch into the new games that we designed.

Testing and Feedback Phase

Community Day

Community Day proved to be a great help in understanding the strong/weak points of our games.

It was a great learning and enjoyable experience! To see people’s faces light up and the excitement was amazing. At last, we were able to jot down insights and came up with ideas that we might/should work on going further.

After taking the feedback from the Community Game Day, we went ahead and ideated how to further improve our ideas. Based on those we came up with features that can improve the games.

After hearing the feedback from the Community Game Day, we went ahead and ideated how to further improve our ideas. Based on those we came up with a few features that can improve the games, which we will be working on next.

Conclusion

This project was a great way to look into our society, and understand the usage of objects, the trash produced, Jugaad, etc.

Throughout the journey, we never imagined that an outdoor game like Hopscotch could be manipulated into a portable indoor game, which can be played by different age groups together.

It was a great experience, as a team to be a part of this insightful workshop organized by the National Institute of Design, India, and anchored by Ms.Goksu Kacaroglu and Ms.Ozge Karakaya.
